Washington, 27 Dec
As US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepare to meet in Florida this Sunday, Trump has asserted
that any potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia would need his
approval, even as Kyiv readies a new 20-point peace plan, Politico reported.
In
remarks underscoring his central role in the negotiations, Trump said, "Hedoesn't have anything until I approve it. So we'll see what he's got." Zelenskyy
is expected to outline a comprehensive proposal aimed at bringing an end to the
nearly four-year-long conflict with Russia. According to Zelenskyy, the peace
framework prepared by Ukrainian and US officials is 90 per cent complete.
The
proposal is reported to include the creation of a demilitarised zone and
discussions around security guarantees from the United States. Trump,
meanwhile, expressed optimism about the diplomatic outreach, signalling
confidence in his engagement with both Kyiv and Moscow. "I think it's
going to go well with him. I think it's going to go good with [Vladimir]
Putin," Trump said, adding that he intends to speak with the Russian
president "soon, as much as I want."
Trump’s
comments came a day after Zelenskyy held talks with Trump’s special envoy Steve
Witkoff and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, an interaction the
Ukrainian leader later described as a "good conversation."
The US
president also confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would
be visiting him around the same time. "I have Zelenskyy and I have Bibi
coming. They're all coming. They all come. They respect our country
again," Trump said.
According
to Ukrainian officials, Zelenskyy’s meeting with Trump will extend beyond security
guarantees, with discussions expected on the future management of the
Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and control over the Donbas region in eastern
Ukraine, which Russia claims.
Earlier,
Zelenskyy cautioned that while the meeting could help advance peace efforts, no
immediate breakthrough should be expected. In a post on X, he said, "We
have agreed on a meeting at the highest level - with President Trump in the
near future. A lot can be decided before the New Year."
