Melbourne, 22 Dec

The man accused of killing 15 people in a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach had conducted firearms training with his father in regional New South Wales, according to Australian police documents released on Monday.

The statement of facts was made public following the accused Naveed Akram’s video court appearance from a Sydney hospital, where he was being treated for an abdominal injury sustained during the 14 December attack. Police shot and wounded Akram at the scene and killed his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram.

Police allege the father-son duo recorded a video outlining their justification for what authorities described as a meticulously planned terrorist attack. New South Wales officials confirmed Naveed Akram was transferred on Monday from the hospital to prison, though the locations were not disclosed.

According to police, the attack began with the pair throwing four improvised explosive devices toward a crowd celebrating an annual Jewish event at Bondi Beach. The devices described as three aluminium pipe bombs and a tennis ball bomb containing explosives, black powder and steel ball bearings failed to detonate but were termed “viable” IEDs.

Authorities have charged Akram with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder, 40 countsof causing harm with intent to murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. The antisemitic attack coincided with the start of the eight-day Hanukkah celebration and was Australia’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996.

Police said a video found on Akram’s phone shows him and his father "reciting their political and religious views and appear to summarise their justification for the Bondi terrorist attack.” The men are seen “condemning the acts of Zionists” while also adhering to “a religiously motivated ideology linked to the Islamic State.”

Another video filmed in October shows them “firing shotguns and moving tactically.” Police allege there is evidence the pair “meticulously planned this terrorist attack for many months.”
