An Indian-origin man wanted in connection with the assault of Iranian-origin woman, Elnaz Hajtamiri, in Canada in 2021 has been extradited from the United States, according to Canadian media reports.

Sukhpreet Singh, 25, was arrested in Texas in June by the US Marshals Service and charged in August.

He was extradited to York Region, Ontario, on Tuesday and faces charges of aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, York Regional Police said.

A Canada-wide warrant had been issued for Singh in 2023 after he was identified as a suspect in the violent attack on Hajtamiri in a Richmond Hill underground parking garage in 2021.

The case has already led to multiple arrests. In 2022, four suspects, including Hajtamiri’s ex-boyfriend Mohamad Lilo, were charged with assault, attempted murder, and attempted kidnapping. Three more were arrested the following year, bringing the total number of accused to eight with Singh’s extradition.

Police have offered a CAD 1,00,000 reward for information leading to her whereabouts. -
