Venice, 25 June
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and fiancée Lauren Sanchez’s high-profile wedding
in Venice has ignited protests over growing inequality and the city’s
prioritisation of luxury tourism. Originally planned in the central Cannaregio
district, the event was shifted to the more secluded Arsenale area due to
security concerns and activist pressure.
Dozens of local groups, united under the banner “No Space for Bezos,” have
criticised the event as symbolic of Venice becoming a playground for the
ultra-rich. Greenpeace and British group “Everyone Hates Elon” joined the
protests, unfurling a large banner in St. Mark’s Square that read, “IF YOU CAN
RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.”
Protesters argue the lavish multi-day affair, attended by around 200 guests
including Oprah Winfrey and Leonardo DiCaprio, highlights Venice’s neglect of
residents’ needs — especially affordable housing and public services. Critics
also point to Amazon’s labour practices, tax issues, and Bezos’ political
affiliations.
Activists plan a peaceful march on Saturday, celebrating their influence in
shifting the venue and calling for a city focused on people, not profit.
