Paris, 24 June

French authorities have detained 12 suspects after 145 people across the country reported being pricked with syringes during the annual ‘Fête de la Musique’ celebrations over the weekend. The alarming incidents, echoing a wave of similar reports in 2022, occurred as millions took to the streets for outdoor music events, including unprecedented crowds in Paris.

The French interior ministry confirmed that victims, including minors, reported symptoms of dizziness and discomfort, prompting hospital visits and toxicology tests. In Paris alone, 13 syringe-related cases were recorded. Among those attacked were a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man.

In Angoulême, four suspects are believed to have targeted up to 50 individuals. In Metz, two men were arrested, one caught with a syringe, and several alleged victims were under 18. Authorities are investigating whether date-rape drugs like GHB or Rohypnol were used, but this remains unconfirmed.

The attacks triggered widespread concern online, especially after feminist influencer Abrège Soeur warned of social media posts allegedly encouraging syringe assaults on women.
