Humnabad, 5 November

Villagers staged a protest in front of the Humnabad Municipal Council office on Thursday, demanding the immediate relocation of the waste disposal unit located near Sindhanakera village in Humnabad taluk.

Residents said the dumping of waste near the village has led to foul smell, environmental pollution and medical problems. They expressed fear of infectious diseases spreading due to the decomposing garbage and dead animals dumped at the site.

The protesters pointed out that the waste disposal unit is located just 100 to 200 metres from residential areas.

They also sought verification of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board’s permissions, licences and other legal documents about the facility.

The protesters urged the authorities to ensure the scientific disposal of waste, conduct health camps in the village and carry out a survey to identify infectious diseases.

The protesters insisted that the Deputy Commissioner visit the spot and hear their grievances. Later, Assistant Commissioner Prakash Kudare and DSP Madolappa held discussions with the protesters. They assured the villagers that action would be taken within two to three days and the villagers called off their protest.
