Belagavi, 12 October

A delegation of 54 sugarcane farmer leaders from north Karnataka and neighbouring Maharashtra on Monday morning left for Delhi to attend a meeting with the Union Minister scheduled at 3pm. The meeting will be at Krishi Bhavan in New Delhi on Monday to press for a remunerative price for sugarcane and other demands.

The meeting follows a massive protest by sugarcane growers in Hubballi recently, during which farmers expressed strong resentment over the failure to fix a remunerative price for their produce. The protesters addressed Union Minister Pralhad Joshi in an intemperate manner and attempted to lay siege to his residence.

Against this backdrop, a decision was taken at a meeting involving farmers’ representatives, local elected representatives and the district administration to send a delegation to New Delhi for high-level discussions with the concerned Union ministers.

Belagavi deputy commissioner Mohammed Roshan has selected the delegation, including 35 members from the district, to travel at the invitation of the Centre. Sugarcane growers association convenor Chunnappa Pujari led the delegation.
