The education department in Chikkaballapur taluk has issued show-cause notices to 182 teachers working in government higher primary schools following concerns over poor learning levels among students.

The action comes after local Congress MLA Pradeep Eshwar visited several government schools and reportedly found students in Class 7 and above struggling with basic learning skills. According to the MLA, some students were unable to write the Kannada Varnamale and Kagunitha, while others had difficulty performing basic mathematical operations such as addition and subtraction.

Expressing concern over the learning standards, Eswar directed education department officials to initiate corrective measures to improve the quality of education in government schools.

Following his observations, the Block Education Officer (BEO) issued notices to 182 teachers, seeking explanations for the learning gaps and details of measures proposed to help students improve their basic skills.

BEO Sukanya said the department subsequently conducted basic learning assessments among students, following which students performing below the expected level were identified.

“Teachers have been asked to identify the reasons for the learning gaps and take corrective measures,” Sukanya said.

She said teachers had also been instructed to examine factors that may have affected students’ learning over the past six years. The department plans to streamline the teaching and learning process within a fortnight, she added.

Meanwhile, Eshwar said in a social media post that the measures were being taken in the interest of the next generation of students and were not aimed at the next elections.
