Two FIRs registered over stone pelting incident in Bhatkal

Police said stones were allegedly thrown at a madrasa and prayer hall during the procession.

Uttara Kannada, 18 September

Two FIRs have been registered in connection with an alleged stone-pelting incident during a Ganesh idol immersion procession at Talanda in Bhatkal late Wednesday night, police said on Friday.

The incident occurred when members of the Talanda Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samiti were taking the idol for immersion, they said.

Police intervened and brought the situation under control.

According to a complaint lodged at the Bhatkal Town police station, stones were allegedly thrown at a madrasa and a prayer hall during the procession, damaging window panes of the building.

Subsequently, the president of the Talanda Ganeshotsava Samiti lodged a counter-complaint with the police in the early hours of Thursday alleging that stones were thrown at the procession from the terrace of a building.

Police have registered two FIRs based on the complaints and launched an investigation into the incident.

District Superintendent of Police Deepan MN,  Additional Superintendent of Police Krishnamurthy and other senior officers visited the spot and took stock of the situation.

Security has been strengthened in the area following the incident, police said.
