Kolar, 25 July
A woman and her two children allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a farm pond at Chatrakodihalli village near Begli Benajenahalli in Kolar taluk on Friday night. The deceased are identified as Prameela, 40, wife of Suresh, along with her daughter Swapna, 20, and son Ram Charan, 17. Preliminary investigations suggest severe financial difficulties as the cause.
Villagers reported recent disputes over mounting debts, with Suresh, an auto-rickshaw driver, planning to sell their house to manage the crisis—a move opposed by his family. Prameela, a domestic worker, returned home around 6.30pm on Friday.
After dinner, the family went to a nearby farm pond owned by Papanna, where they allegedly drowned. Suresh returned home around 9pm found the house empty, and later learned their bodies were found floating in the pond.
Swapna and Ram Charan were students, with Swapna recently completing her degree and Ram Charan preparing for NEET. Police are investigating, and the district is reviewing legal action against the pond owner.
