Belagavi, 18 May

A 70-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her grandson in Agasage village in Belagavi taluk, just hours after she approached police seeking protection from his harassment.

The deceased, Balavva Kalgouda Patil, had reportedly gone to Kakati Police Station on Sunday night to lodge a complaint against her grandson, Kalgouda, over repeated harassment.

Police, considering her age and the late hour, reportedly dropped her back to Agasage village in a police vehicle. Locals allege the accused was neither detained nor strictly warned, with police advising her to call the emergency helpline 112 if the harassment continued.

Shortly after the police left, Kalgouda allegedly attacked her with a knife, questioning what action authorities would take against him. Balavva sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.

Before her death, the woman reportedly showed neighbours a note containing the emergency number “112”, written by police personnel, and asked them to seek help. The blood-stained note has since become a disturbing symbol of the incident.

The accused fled after the attack, and a search operation has been launched to trace him.

Locals also allege that Balavva had earlier lodged multiple complaints against her grandson, but no strict action was taken.
