Belagavi, 10 March
Anthropic India
Private Limited, the Indian subsidiary of US-based AI firm Anthropic PBC,
appeared before the Belagavi District and Commercial Court in Karnataka on
Monday following a summons issued in a case filed by the Belagavi-based IT
start-up Anthropic Softwares Private Limited.
The dispute centres on
the use of the "Anthropic" brand name. The Belagavi start-up has
accused the US company and its Indian subsidiary of infringing on its brand.
During Monday's hearing,
Anthropic India Private Limited’s counsel argued that although it is a
subsidiary of the US company, it is a separate legal entity and has no
connection with the claims in the suit.
The Belagavi company’s
counsel stated that both the US parent firm and its subsidiary are parties in
the case.
Judge Manjunath Nayak posted the matter for hearing on 23 March. The court also directed that a fresh summons be issued to the US address of Anthropic PBC.
