Belagavi, 3 Feb

A man was murdered in a brutal attack, reportedly over a personal dispute dating back nearly ten years at Belagavi district in the State.

The incident occurred on Monday evening in Hulikatti village, Saundatti taluk, where 51-year-old Basappa Hosamani was stabbed at least 16 times by Irrayya Mathapati, aged 32. Police stated, "We found 16 attacks on Basappa's body."

The victim, from Sadoni village, had eloped with the accused’s mother in 2015 when Irrayya was 18, and they later settled in Maharashtra.

The accused had harboured resentment since then and was waiting for Basappa’s return. After the attack, Irrayya reportedly stood with his foot on the body until police arrived, then called and surrendered himself.

A murder case has been registered against him at the Savadatti police station.

Police believe the long-standing grudge, linked to the elopement, prompted the attack, which involved multiple fatal injuries inflicted with a machete.

The incident highlights the enduring impact of past personal conflicts
