A case has been filed following an alleged extortion attempt and physical assault on a farmer in Dakshina Kannada district. The incident occurred in Mulki on Thursday evening, according to local police.
Sources revealed that the accused, identified as Shyamsundar Shetty, Akshay Poojari, and Suvin, forcibly accessed the property of Shamsu Saheb in Kelaginmane. They reportedly demanded money under the pretext of extortion.
When Shamsu’s son, Sahabuddin, challenged this demand, an altercation erupted, escalating into violence. Eyewitnesses recounted that earlier in the day, the accused photographed the family’s cattle shed, housing award-winning buffaloes from a local Kambala event.
The group returned later in a vehicle, confronting Sahabuddin and his father. Police allege that Shyamsundar Shetty struck Sahabuddin, while Akshay Poojari attempted to push him, reiterating their demand for money.
When Sahabuddin began filming the confrontation, Suvin allegedly threatened him and struck him with an iron rod. Local residents intervened, allowing the victims to escape while the assailants fled prior to police arrival.
A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement, and attempted murder.
