Is Mysuru losing its heritage? Leaders, thinkers warn against unchecked expansion

MP Yaduveer Krishnadutta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Sunday urged the State
government to opt for a sustainable green developmental model for Mysuru’s
expansion. He urged the government to consider Mysuru’s heritage and
cultural significance.
Speaking
at a seminar on the city's future, ‘Greater Mysore or Greater Vision – What Does
Mysore Truly Need?’ held at Bahadoor Institute of Management Services,
Manasagangotri Campus, University of Mysore, he said that mere expansion
of boundaries will not serve any purpose.
Renowned
actor and public intellectual Prakash Belawadi cautioned against blindly
replicating Bengaluru’s unplanned infrastructure model. He urged citizens to
come together on a common platform to protect Mysore’s identity, rights, and
long-term interests.
Hunsur
MLA GD Harish Gowda spoke on the intricacies of urban planning and
governance, highlighting that a coordinated approach among multiple government
agencies is essential to translate the vision of Greater Mysore into reality.
Former
chief secretary of state government Ravindra countered, sharing valuable insights from his experience
with Smart City projects and heritage conservation in Bengaluru, presenting
practical examples and strategies that could be adapted effectively for Mysuru.
In
his opening remarks, Dr Shushrutha Gowda, Neurologist and Founding Secretary of
VR Trust, addressed the broader implications of the Greater Mysore concept. He
emphasised that Mysuru’s growth must remain firmly rooted in its unique legacy
and values.
Several NGO, environmentalists, activists, academicians, and progressive thinkers took part in the event alongside noted economist Prof KC Basavaraju.
