Once a lifeline for Ammacheruvapalli village in Srinivaspur taluk of Kolar, the Yagavoddu tank had long fallen silent as years of silt accumulation and erratic rainfall left it dry and desolate. Today, it stands revived, thanks to a restoration initiative led by Aahwahan Foundation, Bengaluru, in partnership with Netcracker Technology, at a cost of Rs 80 lakh.

“The tank, spread across nearly 20 acres, has regained its vitality and renewed the community’s faith,” said Viswanatha Sastry, a priest from neighbouring Royalpad village. The revival included desilting, bund strengthening, and clearing inflow channels blocked by weeds and slush. Saplings were planted along the periphery to restore its natural charm, said Aahwahan Foundation CEO Braja Kishore Pradhan.

Ramesh Gowda, a local farmer, recalled, “When the tank dried up, we lost all hope. Seeing it full again feels like life has returned.” The rejuvenation has significantly improved the region’s groundwater levels and revived farming activities across seven neighbouring villages.

“The revival of Yagavoddu Kere has changed everything, it recharged groundwater, revived farms, and reversed migration. It’s proof that sustainable efforts can transform lives,” said Byre Gowda, president of the Government Employees Association.

Beyond agriculture, the restored lake will now support fishing, livestock, and small-scale economic activities, creating a ripple effect across the local economy.

A similar project in Mulbagal taluk turned a garbage-filled tank into a scenic community space, symbolising how environmental restoration can foster both ecological balance and social renewal.
