A total of 25 students of Dr BR Ambedkar residential school at Aldur in Karnataka's Chikkamagaluru district were hospitalised on Saturday – four of them in serious condition – after consuming contaminated food at the hostel, sources said.

The students suffered from vomiting, stomach aches and dehydration after eating the meals. After providing primary treatment in the local primary health centre, the students were shifted to Malle Gowda district hospital in Chikkamagaluru for further treatment.

The students told the officials of the food and civil supplies, education and social welfare departments who visited the hospital that the food served was contaminated and that there were dead insects found in the rice and curry.

"We are being served such food every day," the students told the officials. The sample of the food was sent for testing at a government laboratory.

Officials of the social welfare department, which looks after the hostel, have questioned the hostel warden, the food grain store in-charge and the cooks.
