A flood alert was announced in Uttara Kannada district, as heavy rains filled the Kadra reservoir, necessitating a release of 33,000 cusecs of water to the Kali river on Friday. Rains continued to pound the district with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert.

As per the directions of the district administration, the Irrigation Department opened 4 crest gates to release the water, urging residents on the banks of the river to exercise caution. The district administration had earlier instructed the Irrigation Department to release water if the reservoir levels reached a height of 30 metres.

To maintain water level in the reservoir, the same quantity of water is expected to be released everyday until rains recede.

Educational institutions up to Pre-University in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts also declared holiday on Friday owing to the rains.
