Advocate alleges caste-based attack in Yadgir
A 28-year-old Dalit lawyer, Durgappa Hosamani, was assaulted by two upper-caste men in Yadgir’s Nagaral village for allegedly "daring to walk" before them. A police case is filed; the accused are absconding. Hosamani was in town from Bengaluru.

YADGIR, 20 JUNE
A young Dalit
lawyer has been attacked by people belonging to the upper caste in Nagaral
village in Yadgir district.
The incident
occurred on 17 June when the victim, Durgappa Basappa Hosamani, 28 and his
uncle Vijaykumar Hosamani were walking near Nagaral Cross area. The accused
Arjun Devadi and
Mallappa Hulakal, hailing from the Kuruba caste allegedly verbally attacked
Hosamani. The accused were reportedly in an inebriated condition.
"I had come
to my native village from Bengaluru. While I was strolling with my uncle, two
persons belonging to the Kuruba caste began verbally abusing me. They said how
I dared to walk in front of them. When I questioned them back, they began
attacking,” said Hosamani.
While Arjun
grabbed the victim’s shirt collar, Mallayya hit him on the head with his
slipper. When his uncle, Vijaykumar tried to intervene, the assailants shoved
them to the ground and kicked them.
Though locals
rescued them and took them to hospital, the accused threatened to kill them the
next time.
Hosamani filed a
complaint with the police. A case was registered against the two accused under
various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Efforts are
underway to nab the accused, who are currently absconding.
