Andhra Pradesh police cracked a gold heist within three days, recovering
3.5kg of gold worth Rs. 3.5 crore. The stolen gold was recovered from four
individuals, including Jayapal, a Congress leader and Municipal Councillor from
Robertsonpet, Kolar Gold Field (KGF).
Jayapal, a prominent Congress figure in KGF, had
previously served as Chairman of the KGF Urban Development Board and contested
in the Assembly elections.
The heist occurred on 2 April when Chetan, a relative of
gold merchant Deepak Jain, was transporting gold biscuits from Chennai to KGF.
According to sources in KGF, Deepak Jain, a gold
jewellery businessman in KGF, had been sourcing gold from Chennai at cheaper
rates and selling it to traders in KGF.
The miscreants intercepted Chetan’s vehicle near
Nayakaneri around 8.45pm, threatening him and looting the entire stash of 3.5kg
of gold.
Deepak filed a complaint on 3 April, leading to the
formation of four special police teams. Police investigated the call details of
Mukram Pasha, the driver of the vehicle. The investigation revealed that Mukram
had informed Jayapal and others about the gold shipment.
On 5 April, police intercepted an Innova car near
Raghavapalli arresting Jayapal, his driver Babu, Mukram, and Shanmugam. Jayapal
has confessed to orchestrating the robbery with twelve others from Peranampet,
Tamil Nadu.
