BENGALURU, 29 MARCH
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has addressed Prime
Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to designate the samadhi of Kittur Rani
Chennamma as a "monument of national importance" under the Ancient
Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958. Rani Chennamma, the
queen of the former princely state of Kittur, is celebrated for her valiant
resistance against the British East India Company in 1824.
In a letter to Modi, Siddaramaiah highlighted the samadhi’s
historical and cultural significance, asserting that Rani Chennamma is a
pivotal figure in India's independence narrative, inspiring generations with
her courage. He described the site, located in Bailahongala taluk of Belagavi
district, as not merely a resting place but a “sacred site” embodying the
enduring spirit of India's struggle for freedom.
"Recognising this site as a 'nationally important
monument' would be crucial in preserving her legacy and honouring her
contributions," Siddaramaiah stated. He brought to the Prime Minister’s
attention that, despite its importance, the samadhi requires proper
conservation and development to protect it from degradation.
Additionally, the Chief Minister noted that such recognition
would enhance visibility and attract visitors, promoting cultural tourism and
contributing to the socio-economic growth of the region. He emphasised the role
of national recognition in reinforcing Karnataka’s pride and securing its
rightful place in Indian history.
Siddaramaiah urged Modi to instruct the Ministry of Culture
and the Archaeological Survey of India to expedite the evaluation process for
declaring the samadhi a monument of national importance, thereby ensuring the
future preservation and appreciation of Rani Chennamma’s remarkable legacy.
