KOPPAL, 10 MARCH

Authorities are intensifying night patrols, installing special barricades for vehicle checks, and mandating the installation of CCTV cameras at homestays and resorts in response to the shocking gang-rape of two women near Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to police officials.

The harrowing incident occurred on Thursday night when a 27-year-old Israeli tourist and a local homestay operator were allegedly assaulted while stargazing. Additionally, three male tourists accompanying the women were attacked and thrown into a canal, with one of them tragically found dead.

In the aftermath of the attack, reports indicate that many foreign visitors are departing Hampi and its surrounding areas. Ram L Arasiddi, Superintendent of Police for Koppal, announced that highway patrols have been increased and an inspector has been assigned specifically for night patrols in Anegundi and Sanapur.

"We held discussions with homestay, resort, and hotel owners on the safety protocols necessary for the protection of tourists, particularly foreign nationals," Arasiddi stated. "We have issued strict instructions for the installation of CCTV cameras and have asked owners to notify local police stations about foreign guests. It is compulsory for these tourists to complete Form C, providing visa and passport details along with passport-sized photographs."

In light of previous incidents involving wildlife, homestay operators have also been advised against nighttime excursions.

"Random inspections will be conducted at homestays and resorts for illegal substances, and special barricades have been set up for vehicle checks. These measures will remain in place, and if any complaints arise, we will undertake raids," he added.

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the rape and murder case, with further investigations ongoing.
