NIA nabs two in Karwar naval base for spying

Three more staff members of the naval base were interrogated in Karwar city police station on Monday in connection with the development.

The National Ingestion Agency (NIA) on Tuesday took into custody two contract workers of the high security Seabird Naval Base in Karwar taluk of the district, for alleged spying. Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Narayan M said the NIA has taken two staffers into custody and interrogated them in Karwar city police station. “The duo allegedly passed a few photographs of the highly secured prohibited zone to others,” he said. Salar News sources also confirmed that the NIA team that arrived Karwar on Monday has taken Akshay Naik from Ankola taluk and Vetan Tandel from Karwar taluk on charges of sending a few campus photographs of base to a woman working as a spy for Pakistan. The entire naval base is a prohibited area where outsiders are not and no staff can take a photo or video footage. Sources in police said that the duo taken into custody was victim of honey trap by the woman and sent the photographs in 2024. The NIA, according to police, took the two persons in to custody after tracking details about the woman. Three more staff members of the naval base were interrogated in Karwar city police station on Monday in connection with the development. The two people taken in to custody were subjected to a medical test at a government hospital in Karwar before taking them to Delhi.
