Errors and blunders in Bidar University’s question papers
for the undergraduate examinations in the current academic year have raised
many questions about the diligence of those who prepared them and the varsity’s
monitoring of the whole process.
The undergraduate exams, which began on 28 January, will
conclude on 19 February.
The English version of a question in the BA first semester
subject Indian Constitution says, "Who is the Chairman of the Drafting
Committee of the Indian Constitution?" However, the Kannada translation of
the same question asks, "Who is the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of
India?"
In the same question paper, for the multiple-choice question
"Who appoints the judges of the Supreme Court?" the options are
missing in the English version, though thy are provided in its Kannada
translation.
While the English version of the same question paper has
fewer errors, several words are incorrectly translated into Kannada. For
instance, "court" is mentioned as "courtyard,"
"judge" as "justice," "bill" as "act"
and "President of India Droupadi Murmu" is mentioned only as
"Murmu."
In the BA first-semester political science question paper,
Kannada translations contain erroneous mention of "patriarch" instead
of "forefather", "social" as "societal" and
"law" as "legal".
Similarly, in the BA third-semester (NEP) question paper,
the word "movement" is misprinted as two different words in different
places.
A quick glance at these question papers raises suspicion
that the translations are done electronically and left unchecked.
Vice Chancellor Dr BS Biradar told Salar News, "I was
not aware of these errors in the question papers. We will take disciplinary
action against those responsible. A meeting will be held with subject heads to
ensure such mistakes do not happen again."
