Chief
Minister Siddaramaiah has announced that the government is considering
introducing new legislation to impose stricter penalties under the existing
drug laws to address the growing drug menace in Karnataka. According to the
proposed changes, those arrested in drug-related cases will face a minimum jail
term of 10 years and will not be eligible for bail.
Siddaramaiah
outlined the measures discussed during a meeting with senior officials,
including Bengaluru Police Commissioner. The government will set up a task
force comprising ministers from home, health, medical education, urban
development and ITBT departments, with the aim of tackling the issue through
coordinated efforts across these sectors, the Chief Minister said on Wednesday.
The task force, led by the Home Minister, will be responsible for overseeing
all drug control operations in the State.
Siddaramaiah
directed police to take stringent action against drug trafficking and abuse,
particularly in areas known for high drug activity. Police inspectors in these
areas will be held accountable if adequate action is not taken. The government
is also focusing on involving students in drug-prevention efforts, with plans
to introduce a student policing system in schools, colleges and hostels,
supported by NCC and NSS units.
Siddaramaiah
highlighted concerns about the unauthorised sale of synthetic drugs and
psychotropic substances in medical shops, saying the licences of those involved
in such activities would be revoked.
District
committees, which are already working to prevent drug abuse, will be asked to
intensify their efforts. The Education and Social Welfare Departments are
expected to regularly conduct awareness programs in schools and hostels. —Salar
