BENGALURU, 7 JUN
Karnataka government has banned the
screening of the Hindi movie ‘Hamare Baarah’ for at least two weeks after some
Muslim organisations raised concerns.
In an order, the government stalled
the release of the film and its trailer in electronic media, social media, film
theatres, private television channels or other media.
The order said several Muslim
organisations had appealed to the government not to allow the screening of the
movie which portrays Islam in an "instigative and derogatory manner",
and permitting such a film would lead to hatred between faiths and communities.
The organisations said a conspiracy has been going on to target a particular
faith, disturb peace and hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition R
Ashoka has voiced criticism of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's decision to ban
the movie 'Hamare Baarah'. The BJP leader said on X platform: "CM
@siddaramaiah's decision to ban #HamareBaarah movie in Karnataka is yet another
brazen attempt to muzzle freedom of speech and expression in the state."
Questioning the motives behind the
ban, the BJP leader asked who the Chief Minister and the Karnataka Congress
were trying to appease with this action.
“There is no threat to law and
order in Karnataka because of this movie, which is being screened across the
country. Instead of protecting civil liberties and freedom of expression CM
@siddaramaiah has yet again chosen to stand with radical elements. Shame on
@INCKarnataka's regressive vote bank politics and intolerance," he said.
