The literary
community mourns the loss of Professor Gurulinga Kapse, a prominent figure in
Kannada literature and a former chairman of Karnataka Sahitya Academy and
writer who passed away after a prolonged illness on Tuesday night in Dharwad.
He was 96.
In accordance with
his wishes, his mortal remains will be donated to Dr Ramannavar Hospital in
Bailhongal of Belagavi District. Born in BK Loni village in Vijayapura
district, Kapse made significant contributions to Kannada literature,
particularly in the realms of philosophy, spirituality, prose, and poetry. His
expertise extended to both Kannada and Marathi, enabling him to translate
literary works between the two languages.
In 2022, The
Central Sahitya Acadamy awarded Kapse for his work ‘Ondu Putada Kathe’, a
translation of Marathi writer VS Khandekar’s ‘Ek Panaachi Gosth’ (an
autobiography). Having served as a Professor of Kannada at Karnataka College in
Dharwad, Kapse received recognition for his literary endeavours, including
awards from the Karnataka Sahitya Academy and the State Nataka Academy. Kapse's
legacy includes his dedication to promoting children's literature in Kannada
and his notable translation work, for which he received accolades such as the
Central Sahitya Academy's annual translation award.
