BENGALURU, JAN 16
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday ordered the
creation of an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police post for all eight
zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police in the city. “We are celebrating golden jubilee of the naming of our state
as Karnataka. The state police too got its name of Karnataka police, which was
previously known as Mysore police. This should be celebrated,” he told
reporters at the Golden Jubilee of Karnataka Unification event.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister announced the
construction of a well-equipped Suvarna Bhavan for the Police Department and
the funds will be allocated in the upcoming budget in February. The senior
police officials of Cyber, Economic and Narcotics (C.E.N) stations will be
upgraded to the posts of Additional Commissioner of Police and Deputy
Commissioner of Police.
“We have also decided to give
silver medal to all the policemen to celebrate 50 years of the naming of state
as Karnataka."
Siddaramaiah also announced that starting this year the
limit for the annual medical check-up worth Rs 1,000, which all police
officials are entitled to, will be upgraded to Rs 1,500. A silver medal will be
provided to all the police personnel of the state, said Siddaramaiah.
However, Siddaramaiah expressed dissatisfaction over the
punishment rate for crimes against the dalits, women and children.
Speaking at the event the Chief Minister said, “The
quality of investigation in cases of atrocities should be improved if the
victims are to have faith in the system. Violence against women and children
should be completely stopped by increasing punishment. Otherwise, it will be
necessary to blame the DCPs themselves for this failure.”
“Our government has given complete liberty to the police.
It is my commitment not to interfere regarding police affairs, but the liberty
should not be misused,” he said.
Regarding the increasing theft cases, Siddaramaiah said
that the increase in theft cases reflects the failure of Hoysala and patrolling
officers.
The Chief Minister also advised against using caste for
transfers in the department. He also promised that all the vacancies would be
filled as soon as possible.
To a question on growing moral
policing, the Chief Minister said, “So far as moral policing is concerned, our
government will not allow anybody to take law into their hands. We will not
tolerate we will punish them in accordance with the law.”
