Sydney, 2 Dec
Glenn Maxwell has withdrawn from the upcoming IPL mini auction
in Abu Dhabi on 16 December, bringing an end to a decade-long association
marked by sporadic brilliance and prolonged inconsistency.
The 37-year-old, long known as Big Show for his explosive early
potential, has featured in every IPL season since 2012 except in 2019.
Across 141 matches, he scored 2,819 runs at a strike rate above 155 but
averaged under 24. His off-breaks fetched 41 wickets at an economy of 8.30.
“After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not
to put my name into auctions this year. It’s a big call and one I make with a
lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me,” Maxwell wrote on his Instagram page.
“The IPL has shaped me as a cricketer and as a person. I have
been lucky to play with world class teammates, incredible franchises, and
perform in-front of fans whose passion is unmatched. The memories, challenges
and the energy of India will stay with me forever.”
Though Maxwell did not cite a reason, franchise interest had clearly dwindled. Only once, in 2021, did he cross 500 runs in a season, scoring 513 with six fifties. In the last two editions, he aggregated only 52 and 48 runs. Last season, he left after seven games and did not return when the IPL resumed post Operation Sindoor.
