Liverpool, 14 Sept

Indian boxer Jaismine Lamboria scripted history, winning the featherweight title at the World Championships with a 4-1 victory over Paris Olympics silver medallist Julia Szeremeta of Poland.

The 24-year-old dominated the 57kg summit clash late Saturday, prevailing on the judges’ scorecards (30-27, 29-28, 30-27, 28-29, 29-28), capping a stellar campaign that saw her outclass all rivals.

With the triumph, Jaismine became the ninth Indian world champion, joining legends like six-time winner Mary Kom, Nikhat Zareen, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL, Lekha KC, Nitu Ghanghas, Lovlina Borgohain, and Saweety Boora.

Competing in her third World Championships, Jaismine grew into the bout after a cautious start. Szeremeta drew first blood in the opening round, using her speed and defensive manoeuvres to edge 3-2. But Jaismine adjusted her rhythm in the second round, controlling distance, evading attacks, and landing crisp combinations that swayed the judges.

When the final verdict was announced, a jubilant Jaismine let out a yell and raised her hand before embracing her opponent. At the medal ceremony, she was visibly moved as the Indian national anthem played.

Nupur walks away with silver

In the 80+kg final, Nupur Sheoran settled for silver after a narrow 2-3 loss to Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska. Despite a height advantage and a strong start, Nupur was worn down by Kaczmarska’s relentless counters and body blows. A decisive uppercut in the final round tipped the verdict in Kaczmarska’s favour, securing her first world title.

Pooja signs off with bronze

Pooja Rani (80kg) claimed bronze after a 1-4 semifinal defeat to local favourite Emily Asquith. Pooja started strongly, leading after the first round, but Asquith adapted quickly, using sharper counters and cleaner execution to turn the match around.
