Chennai, 7 November

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay expressed concern over the site inspection by Central officials regarding Karnataka's Mekedatu dam proposal.

Writing to Modi, Vijay opposed Karnataka's proposal to construct a reservoir across the Cauvery "with a huge capacity of 67.16 TMC," just upstream of the inter-state border, as it would not only prevent flows to the state but also affect the monthly deliveries to Tamil Nadu ordered by the SC.

Emphasising the need to ensure water availability in the Cauvery basin of Tamil Nadu, Vijay demanded that any action arising from recent site inspection by officials be deferred.

He urged the PM not to grant approvals without the consent of co-basin states and requested that Karnataka be advised not to proceed with the project without the consent of co-basin states.

Vijay also referred to a writ filed by Tamil Nadu in the Supreme Court on 3 August, challenging the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in December 2025 for the preparation of DPRs for irrigation and multi-purpose projects in the Cauvery basin. The matter is pending before the SC.
