New Delhi, 3 Feb
After nearly a year under President’s Rule, the Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) has moved to restore an elected government in Manipur.
Senior party leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh is set to be the new Chief Minister
of Manipur.
Khemchand was chosen as the leader of the BJP legislative
party in Manipur on Tuesday, and he is expected to be endorsed as the NDA
legislature party leader later in the night during a meeting of all legislators.
The move comes just days before the scheduled end of
President’s Rule in the northeastern state, underscoring a shift toward normal
democratic governance after a prolonged period of direct central
administration.
Manipur has been under President's rule since 13 February,
2025. The 60-member Assembly was put on suspended animation after President's
rule was imposed. Former chief minister N Biren Singh resigned last year amid
prolonged ethnic violence and political instability.
