Mumbai, 10 Dec

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has summoned IndiGo Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers to its office at 3 pm on Thursday, seeking a comprehensive explanation and updated data on the recent large-scale operational disruptions affecting the airline, the regulator stated on Wednesday.

IndiGo, the country’s largest carrier, has faced severe turbulence after thousands of flights were cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled in the past few weeks, inconveniencing lakhs of passengers across major airports. In view of the crisis, DGCA said the CEO must appear along with senior officials from all relevant departments to provide a detailed status report.

The regulator has directed the airline to present complete information on flight restoration, crew recruitment and deployment plans, the current strength of pilots and cabin crew, as well as the number of cancellations and refunds processed so far. The expected updates also include IndiGo’s manpower planning and readiness to comply with new pilot duty and rest regulations.

Earlier, DGCA chief Faiz Ahmed Kidwai had ordered the formation of a four-member committee to investigate the operational breakdown. The panel comprising Joint DG Sanjay Brahamane, Deputy DG Amit Gupta, Senior Flight Operations Inspector Kapil Manglik, and FOI Lokesh Rampal has been tasked with identifying root causes, reviewing compliance with revised Flight Duty Time Limitations, and fixing accountability for the disruptions.

The committee will closely scrutinise crew scheduling systems and operational preparedness to prevent future service failures.
