The boyfriend of RG Kar Medical College student Anindita Soren, who died under mysterious circumstances in Malda, was arrested on Sunday and sent to six days’ police custody.

Police said Ujjwal Soren, a junior doctor at Malda Medical College, was named in an FIR lodged by the victim’s family, accusing him of poisoning her. Anindita’s mother alleged that he killed her after refusing to formally register their marriage despite a secret temple wedding in Puri.

“She was frothing at the mouth when we saw her in the hospital,” her mother, Alpana Tudu, said, claiming her daughter had been under pressure due to frequent quarrels over the marriage.

Anindita, 24, a resident of Balurghat, had met Ujjwal through social media and medical events. The family said they were informed she had fallen seriously ill and was taken to Malda hospital, but were shocked to learn of her death the next day.

Police picked up Ujjwal from his rented house in Malda’s Englishbazar town. He will be produced in court again on 20 September.

The West Bengal Junior Doctor Front expressed condolences and called for a fair and speedy probe.
