The
Indian Army has denied claims by the banned insurgent group United Liberation
Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) that it carried out drone strikes on their
eastern headquarters in Myanmar. ULFA-I had alleged that 19 of its cadres were
killed and 19 others injured in a cross-border drone attack early Sunday. It
also claimed that senior commander Nayan Medhi was among those killed, along with
members of Manipuri insurgent groups like the Revolutionary People’s Front
(RPF), affiliated with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of Manipur.
However,
the Indian Army rejected the allegation, stating it had no inputs about such an
operation. “There are no inputs with the Indian Army on such an operation,”
said Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, PRO Defence, Guwahati.
Sources
suggest the reported attack could be a result of internal conflict among
insurgent groups rather than Indian military action. ULFA-I, led by Paresh
Barua—who is believed to have ties with Pakistan’s ISI—is reportedly at a low
point, with only one senior functionary, Arunodoy Dohotiya, remaining active in
Myanmar.
The
India-Myanmar border remains volatile, often used by insurgent outfits to establish
camps. In May 2025, at least 10 militants were killed in an encounter near
Manipur's Chandel district.
