The Supreme Court administration has urged the Centre to ensure former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud vacates the Chief Justice’s official bungalow at 5, Krishna Menon Marg, after overstaying nearly eight months post-retirement. Justice Chandrachud, who retired on 10 November, 2024, was entitled to a Type VIII bungalow during his tenure and a Type VII bungalow rent-free for six months post-retirement. However, he continued in the Type VIII residence beyond the permitted period, with the latest extension expiring on 31 May, 2025.
The Supreme Court currently faces a shortage of accommodations for four judges, heightening the urgency of reclaiming the bungalow. In a 1 July letter, the court administration asked the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to take immediate possession, noting the expiration of permissions under Rule 3B of the 2022 Rules.
Justice Chandrachud cited personal circumstances, including the special needs of his daughters and delays in preparing his allotted temporary accommodation, for the overstay. He stated he is ready to move as soon as repairs are complete, insisting he does not wish to occupy the bungalow longer than necessary. The court has stressed no further extensions will be granted.
