New Delhi, 12 June
Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has revealed that India is exploring futuristic public transport solutions, including elevated “flying buses” and flash-charging electric systems, to ease traffic congestion and cut pollution in major cities.
Gadkari, speaking to NDTV, said the government is evaluating 360 proposals, with pilot projects already planned for Delhi and Bengaluru. “Our biggest problems are pollution and fossil fuel imports, which cost us Rs 22 lakh crore,” he noted. “Public transport must be prioritised, but people now demand comfort. Luxury buses are gaining popularity.”
Key proposals include aerial pod taxis — electric, driverless pods running on elevated tracks — capable of carrying up to 135 passengers. Technologies from the US, Europe, and Russia are under review.
Gadkari also cited a Nagpur pilot featuring a flash-charging electric bus, which recharges in 30 seconds when stationary and runs for 40 km. These buses offer air conditioning and onboard refreshments.
He added that only proven, cost-effective technologies will be implemented, and companies like Siemens and Hitachi are being considered.
