MUMBAI, 4 APRIL
Actor John Abraham has extended support to the ongoing protests against the alleged felling of trees across 400 acres in Kancha Gachibowli near Hyderabad Central University. In a post on X, Abraham urged Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to "scrap the plan", calling the area a vital green lung for the city and home to protected wildlife. He warned that clearing the forest would displace animals and worsen man-wildlife conflict.
The protests, led by university students and environmental group
Vata Foundation, allege that the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure
Corporation is using bulldozers to clear the land. Petitioners have asked the Telangana
High Court to declare the area a national park.
On Friday,
the Supreme Court referred to an interim report from the Telangana High Court,
describing the situation as “alarming,” with widespread tree felling. A bench
led by Justices BR Gavai and AG Masih questioned whether an environmental
impact assessment was conducted and what urgency justified the clearance.
The
Supreme Court has now ordered the Telangana government to halt all activity on
the land. In response, the state government stated that no university land was
touched and assured that the area's biodiversity would be protected while
setting up IT infrastructure to generate employment.
