Chennai, 24 March
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced on 24 March that all party
MPs from the state will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to press their demand
for fair delimitation.
Stalin emphasised that Tamil Nadu has taken the lead on the issue by
passing legislative resolutions, holding all-party meetings and forming an All
India Joint Action Committee, which has had a significant impact at the
national level.
"The demand made by Tamil Nadu is for fair delimitation. It is the first state in India to pass legislative resolutions, all-party meetings and an All India Joint Action Committee, which has had an impact at the Indian level. To take this to the next level, all party MPs from Tamil Nadu are set to meet the Hon'ble Prime Minister and press our demand!" Stalin posted on X.
The Tamil Nadu government has been vocal about its opposition to any
delimitation process that reduces the state's representation in Parliament due
to population control efforts.
The proposed meeting with the Prime Minister is aimed at ensuring that
Tamil Nadu's concerns are addressed in any future changes to parliamentary seat
allocations.
Stalin had called a meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on 22
March to discuss the delimitation issue. Leaders from various states gathered
in Chennai to express their concerns over the proposed exercise. The committee
passed a resolution on the delimitation issue, expressing concern over the
"lack of transparency and clarity" on the part of the central
government.
The JAC, led by Stalin, unanimously demanded greater transparency from
the central government regarding any delimitation exercise and called for
extending the freeze on parliamentary constituencies based on the 1971 census
population for another 25 years. The committee urged the central government
"not to punish" states that have effectively implemented the
population control programme. Further, they resolved that political parties
from various states represented at the meeting will move appropriate assembly
resolutions on the delimitation issue.
The resolution said, "The political parties from various states
participating in the meeting shall initiate efforts to bring appropriate
Legislative Assembly resolutions in their respective states on the issue and
communicate it to the Central Government. The JAC shall also make necessary
efforts to disseminate information about the history and context of previous
delimitation exercises and the consequences of the proposed delimitation among
the citizens of their respective states through a coordinated public opinion
mobilisation strategy."
Additionally, the JAC resolved that the MPs shall oppose any attempt by
the Central Government to carry out any delimitation exercise contrary to the
principles mentioned above. It added, "The Core Committee of MPs shall
submit a joint representation on the above lines to the Hon'ble Prime Minister
of India during the current Parliamentary Session." MK Stalin said the
next meeting on delimitation of constituencies will be held in Hyderabad,
Telangana.
