Chennai, 25 Feb

BJP’s Tamil Nadu Art & Cultural Wing State Secretary, Ranjana Nachiyaar, has resigned as the debate over the three-language policy in the state heats up. In a social media post, she accused the BJP of exploiting nationalism and religion for political gains while failing to respect Tamil identity.

Her resignation comes as Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin strongly opposes the BJP-led Centre’s push for the three-language formula. The DMK insists on maintaining the state's two-language policy of Tamil and English, rejecting any attempt to impose Hindi. Meanwhile, BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu support the National Education Policy (NEP), arguing that learning Hindi will open better opportunities.

Announcing her exit on X, Nachiyaar stated, “For the past eight years, I have actively served in various roles within the BJP. Now, it is time to bid farewell.”

She criticised the party’s approach, saying, “Many see the BJP as a nationalist party that upholds the nation’s interests and protects religion. However, when I witness how national identity and religious sentiments are used for political advantage, I can no longer align myself with it.”

Emphasising Tamil identity, she declared, “The dignity of the Tamil language, the richness of Tamil culture, and Tamil pride cannot be compromised. I refuse to stand with those who fail to acknowledge this.”

Nachiyaar also highlighted the challenges women face in politics, stating that the system remains deeply patriarchal, with men making decisions for men. She asserted that she would not be a mere token presence in any political space.

Her departure marks a setback for BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit, led by K Annamalai, who has been actively promoting the three-language policy in the state.
