Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is at the centre of a controversy following the circulation of a notice suggesting that 'beef biryani' would be served for lunch at Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall on Sunday, replacing chicken biryani. The notice, reportedly issued by two individuals claiming to be authorised, quickly gained traction on social media, sparking widespread uproar among students and the broader community.

In response to the backlash, the AMU administration clarified that the notice contained a "typing error" and assured that the individuals responsible have been served with show-cause notices. Initially, the administration refrained from commenting on the matter, but as tensions escalated, they issued a statement labelling the notice an "unintentional mistake."

“The matter was brought to our attention regarding the food menu. However, it was clear that the notice contained a typing error and was immediately withdrawn due to the absence of official signatures, raising doubts about its validity,” a university spokesperson explained.

The administration's response has been met with criticism from some quarters. BJP leader and AMU alumnus Nishit Sharma condemned the university’s handling of the situation, accusing it of fostering an environment that encourages radical elements and mishandling student conduct. He stated that the notice's public display represented a serious lapse in the responsibilities of senior food committee members.

The incident has highlighted sensitivities around food choices in diverse university environments, prompting calls for better communication and oversight within the institution.
