The
Hindi song ‘Sarke Chunar’ from Sanjay Dutt-starrer ‘KD The Devil’ has sparked
widespread outrage over its sexually explicit lyrics. The video has now been removed
from YouTube following intense criticism.
Featuring
Dutt and Nora Fatehi, the track went viral after its release two days ago. The
film, originally in Kannada and set to be dubbed in four languages, will
release on 30 April.
Information
and Broadcasting Ministry has taken note of the controversy and may issue a
notice to YouTube.
Lyricist
Raqueeb Alam distanced himself, stating he merely translated the original
Kannada lyrics written by director Prem. He claimed he had initially refused,
warning that such content would not work and might face censorship, but was asked to
provide a literal translation.
Alam
said he has now been asked to write a “clean” version, which the makers plan to
release with an apology.
Singer
Armaan Malik and filmmaker Onir were among the critics, calling the song
distasteful and questioning standards.
"Wish
I could unhear it. Sad to see commercial songwriting hit a new low," he
wrote on X.
Onir
questioned why the song was not banned. "And the Censor board is busy with
the naming of a film, Ghooskhor Pandat. Strange country we are becoming...
opposing Valentine's Day, interfaith marriage, celebration, while being ok with
this rubbish," he wrote on X.
Many
others on social media also called out the makers for lowering the standard of
music.
"Sad to see how normalised cheap and vulgar lyrics have become in mainstream songs. Shock value isn’t creativity. Bollywood music once had poetry, emotion, and depth - we deserve that standard again," one user wrote on X.
