Superstar Rajinikanth has sparked controversy over remarks made during
the audio launch of his upcoming film ‘Coolie’ on 2 August in Chennai. In his
40-minute speech, the actor referred to co-star Soubin Shahir as “bald” and
Aamir Khan as “short” before praising their performances.
Rajinikanth admitted he initially doubted Soubin’s casting, as he was
unfamiliar with his work. “I asked Lokesh who Soubin was. When I learned he was
bald, I wondered if he would fit the role. But after seeing his scenes, I was
blown away. Hats off!” he said.
On Aamir Khan’s cameo, Rajinikanth recalled being surprised when director Lokesh Kanagaraj informed him. “I thought it would take Aamir two
years to approve a script. He’s such a perfectionist. Like Kamal Haasan in the
South, he stands tall among Bollywood stars despite being short. My salute to
you, sir,” he added.
While Rajinikanth intended to compliment the actors, many online users
criticised his choice of words, calling them body-shaming. Others defended him,
saying his intent was respectful.
