KPCC Communication head Ramesh Babu on Tuesday accused the BJP of displaying “selective outrage” when protesting AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge’s remark that “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” (Even Modi’s father will go).

Babu noted that since 2015, the BJP has launched personal attacks against Kharge and other Congress leaders, including in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, where he is currently the Leader of the Opposition.

“The BJP is entitled to criticise his words and seek an explanation, just as Congress leaders are entitled to question BJP leaders' statements and conduct. However, democratic accountability must be applied consistently and without selective outrage,” Babu stated.

He called on the BJP to demonstrate the “democratic traditions it professes to defend” rather than mobilising “hostility” against individuals or “personal vilification”.

Kharge had made the remark on Sunday in Patna in response to a question if Prime Minister Narendra Modi can actually lose power. The BJP on Monday held nationwide protests and has sought police action, claiming that Kharge’s jab had exposed the Congress lack of political decorum.
