A man allegedly threw acid at his 26-year-old wife and brutally attacked her with a machete multiple times near JP Nagar in Bengaluru on Thursday, police said.

The woman's condition, who reportedly hails from West Bengal and worked as a nurse at a private clinic here, is critical. She is undergoing treatment in the ICU of a hospital, police sources said.

According to police, the incident happened around 9.15am when the woman came out of the clinic in JP Nagar Third Phase to get breakfast.

The man allegedly threw floor cleaner acid at her and chased her. He caught her near the basement entrance and attacked her with a machete multiple times.

Traffic Police personnel nearby rushed to the spot and took the man into custody. Police are questioning him.

In a purported video of the alleged incident that has gone viral, the man can be seen hacking at his wife with what appears to be a machete as people gathered around and watched. Some tried to intervene, but police said that they were afraid and could not rescue her. 

According to preliminary information, the couple, which had married in 2024 in Madurai, had been staying separately for some time due to differences, police said.

“The woman lived in a PG here while working as a nurse, and the man worked at an oil and gas company in Chennai," a senior official said.

DCP Bangalore South said that the man had attacked her with two weapons, but the details were not immediately available.  

“We are verifying the acid's nature, whether it is industrial or domestic use. After receiving the Scene of crime officers (SOCO) report," he said. The accused reportedly travelled from Maduri a day before.
