BENGALURU, 25 JULY

Senior BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar has expressed his enthusiasm over the unveiling of a 75-foot Veeragallu (hero stone) at the National Military Memorial in Bengaluru, scheduled for 26 July. The monolith, weighing 700 tonnes, will be inaugurated to commemorate the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, marking the completion of a long-delayed project.

Chandrasekhar, a former Union Minister, stated, “This journey began 16 years ago, overcoming numerous challenges and opposition from some insensitive individuals. Today, this memorial serves as Karnataka and Bengaluru's tribute to the valour and sacrifice of our armed forces, as well as the pain endured by their families.”

He emphasised that the memorial was his brainchild, inspired by his background as the son of an Air Force veteran. “I initiated this project not only as a Member of Parliament but also as the proud son of Air Commodore MK Chandrasekhar, whose service fostered my deep respect for our military personnel and their families,” he remarked.

Chandrasekhar highlighted the unveiling of the Veeragallu as the culmination of a 16-year mission to create a site of remembrance and honour, asserting that it is more than just a government initiative, but a sacred space for the families of those who served.
