BENGALURU, 7 JULY

State Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao defended Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's controversial remarks linking covid-19 vaccination to a rise in heart attacks in Hassan district, stating that there was no malafide intent. The Chief Minister claimed that "hasty" vaccine approvals could correlate with increased mortality from heart conditions. His comments, which faced backlash from the BJP and prominent figures like Biocon's Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, aimed to spark discussions about vaccination side effects. An expert committee found no link between heart attack cases and prior covid-19 infection or vaccination, asserting the vaccines actually protect against long-term cardiac events. The committee had been established to investigate heart-related fatalities, and their report dismissed "long covid" as a cause for the rise in sudden cardiovascular incidents among the youth.
