Bengaluru, 9 May
Three policemen from the Chikkajala Police
Station have been arrested by Bengaluru Police for allegedly extorting Rs 6
lakh from a group involved in a money-doubling racket.
The accused include two head constables and
a constable who are now under investigation.
According to sources, the officers acted on
a tip-off about fraudsters operating near a prominent hotel in the Chikkajala
jurisdiction. Instead of booking a case, the policemen allegedly detained the
suspects, interrogated them, and then extorted Rs 6 lakh for letting them go
without filing any charges.
The matter came to light a few days later
when the same group was reportedly robbed of Rs 44 lakh while travelling
through the Bagaluru police limits. They lodged a complaint, which led to an
investigation that unearthed the earlier extortion episode, leading to the
arrest of the three officers.
Meanwhile Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, issued a stern warning against any police personnel involved in extortion, civil disputes, particularly land-related issues and instructed senior officers to keep a close watch on their subordinates and prevent any unethical activities.
