Bengaluru, 11 April

The police on Friday arrested a man for allegedly bludgeoning his elderly mother to death with an iron rod after she refused to give him money to buy alcohol.

The incident took place on the night of 10 April in Bagalgunte.
The victim, Shantabai, 82, was reportedly killed by her son, Mahendra Singh around 9.30pm at their residence in Muneshwara Nagar. The Bagalagunte police took the accused into custody for interrogation.
Hailing from Channapatna, Singh, 56, had been living with his mother for the past five years. His addiction to alcohol had reportedly strained family relations, leading to his wife becoming estranged. Unemployed and increasingly dependent on his mother, he regularly demanded money from her.

Shantabai, a widow of a government employee, managed her household through a monthly pension and rent from a property she owned.
According to police, an argument ensued between Shantabai and Singh after she refused to give him money. Enraged, he picked up an iron rod and struck her fatally on the head.
Following inspection, her body was sent to the Victoria Hospital for autopsy. A case of murder has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
