Rain brings smiles to City after sizzling 160 days

The city experienced its driest April in over four decades, coupled with blistering heat that pushed temperatures to above 38 degree Celsius

After enduring a sweltering hot dry spell, Bengaluru residents were granted much-needed relief from the scorching heat as rains descended upon the city after 160 days. The city experienced its driest April in over four decades, coupled with blistering heat that pushed temperatures to above 38 degree Celsius.

 

On Thursday, the mercury soared to 38.2 degree Celsius. However, clouds quickly filled the sky, followed by lightning and thunder, after which it started drizzling around 6 pm. The drizzle intensified into a heavy downpour. Showers were reported over Eastern and Central Bengaluru, whereas North and South Bengaluru received light rains or drizzles.

 

Indiranagar, Marathahalli, Vijayanagar, CV Raman Nagar, Ramamurthy Nagar, KR Puram, Hoodi, Mahadevapura, Banaswadi, Domlur, Ulsoor, Whitefield, Kalyan Nagar, HBR Layout, Jayanagar, Hebbal, HSR Layout, Vasanth Nagar, and Uttarahalli received a good amount of showers.

 

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), hot weather was expected to persist for a few days, with rain expected between May 30 and June 3.

 

Bengaluru residents took to social media to express their relief from the heat. Yashwanth, posted on X, “It rained in Kuppam 2 hours back and it’s now drizzling. Sending the clouds towards Bengaluru.”

 

Meanwhile, Pakchikpak Raja Babu drew a parallel between cricket, world affairs, and rain, saying,

“-SRH is playing slow

- Rinku Singh not selected for World Cup

- Goldy Brar is not dead

- It is raining in Bengaluru. Most unexpected week of 2024.”

 

The City was grappling with extreme heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring 4-5 degrees Celsius above normal. Some areas even reported temperature exceeding 40 degree Celsius. Even at night, temperatures touched 26 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees higher than normal temperatures.
